Pool Automation
Control your pool from your phone. We install, upgrade, and repair pool automation systems across East Honolulu, from basic timer replacements to full Pentair IntelliCenter setups.
Your pool runs on schedules. The pump needs to cycle at specific times. The heater needs to fire before you swim. The lights need to come on at dusk. The salt cell needs to adjust output based on demand. Right now, all of that probably involves walking out to your equipment pad, flipping switches, turning dials, and hoping you remembered to set everything correctly.
Pool automation puts all of that control in one place. A single panel on your equipment pad, connected to an app on your phone, managing every piece of equipment on a schedule you set once and adjust from anywhere. Koko Head Pool Service installs, upgrades, and repairs pool automation systems across Hawaii Kai, Portlock, Kahala, and all of East Honolulu.
What We Do
We handle three types of automation work, and which one you need depends on where you’re starting from.
New installations. If you’re building a new pool or doing a major renovation, that’s the best time to wire in a full automation system. The cost is significantly lower when we’re already running electrical to each piece of equipment. We size the system to your pool, install the panel, connect every device, program your schedules, set up the app on your phone, and walk you through everything before we leave.
Upgrades. Most of our automation work falls here. You have an old mechanical timer that’s corroding, or a basic digital timer that lost its programming again after the last power outage, and you want something better. We replace outdated controls with modern smart controllers that give you app access, scheduling flexibility, and coordination between your pump, heater, lights, and other equipment. The jump from a $200 timer box to a mid-level automation controller is where most homeowners get the biggest return.
Repair and troubleshooting. Automation systems are outdoor electronics in a tropical marine environment. Circuit boards corrode. Relays fail. Actuators seize. Sensors drift. Wi-Fi connections drop. We diagnose and repair automation systems from all three major brands, and we keep surge protectors and desiccant packs in every panel we service to extend its life in Hawaii’s conditions.
Systems We Work With
Three manufacturers dominate residential pool automation: Pentair, Hayward, and Jandy. We service all three and have for years.
Pentair is our preferred brand. Paul has the most experience with Pentair systems, and the IntelliCenter platform has the best touchscreen panel and the most polished app of the three. If you’re running Pentair equipment already (IntelliFlo pump, MasterTemp heater, IntelliChlor salt cell), the IntelliCenter is the natural choice because everything speaks the same language.
Hayward OmniLogic is a capable system at a slightly lower price point. The OmniHub, their mid-tier option, is solid for homeowners who want app control without the full panel. Jandy iAquaLink has been in the automation game the longest and handles mixed-brand equipment better than the other two, which matters on older Hawaii pools where equipment has been replaced piece by piece over the decades.

Why Automation Makes Sense in Hawaii
Hawaii pools run year-round. There’s no off-season, no winterizing, no months where the equipment sits idle. That means your pump, heater, salt cell, and lights are operating 365 days a year, and the scheduling and coordination of all that equipment matters more here than almost anywhere else.
Automation coordinates your equipment so it works together instead of independently. The heater won’t fire unless the pump is running. The salt cell adjusts output based on water flow. The pump drops to low speed during off-peak HECO hours and ramps up only when filtration demand is high. Everything runs on optimized schedules that you set once and forget about, unless you want to adjust them from your phone while you’re at work.
For homeowners who travel frequently, and that’s common here, app-based control means you can monitor and adjust your pool from anywhere. We have customers who spend weeks on the mainland and manage their pool from their phone. When we notice something during a service visit, we can adjust settings remotely too.
Hawaii’s Challenges for Automation Electronics
Our environment is tough on outdoor electronics. Three factors hit automation systems harder in Hawaii than on the mainland, and we plan for all of them on every installation.
Salt air corrodes circuit boards and relay contacts. Automation panels are essentially outdoor computers. The circuit boards, relay contacts, and screen connectors are all vulnerable to corrosion from salt air, especially in coastal neighborhoods like Portlock and along the Diamond Head coast. We mount panels in ventilated enclosures and place desiccant packs inside every panel we install or service.
HECO power surges damage control boards. Hawaii’s power grid has more outages and voltage fluctuations than most mainland utilities. A single surge can destroy a $1,500 to $3,000 control board. We install a quality surge protector on every automation panel. It’s a $50 to $150 investment that protects thousands of dollars in electronics.
Wi-Fi range to the equipment pad. Many homes in East Honolulu have their pool equipment 50 to 100 feet from the house, often separated by walls, landscaping, or a garage. Weak Wi-Fi means the app doesn’t work, which defeats the purpose of automation. We test signal strength during installation and recommend a weatherproof Wi-Fi extender if needed.

Is Automation Right for Your Pool?
Here’s the honest take. Not every pool needs automation, and we’ll tell you that upfront.
Automation makes sense if you have a heater you want to control remotely, you travel frequently and want to monitor your pool from anywhere, you have a pool and spa combination with valve actuators, you’re building a new pool where wiring costs are minimal, or you want to optimize a variable speed pump for energy savings on HECO’s rates.
A simpler solution is probably better if you have a basic pool with just a pump and filter, you’re home most of the time and don’t mind walking to the equipment pad, your existing timer works fine, or your budget is better spent on a variable speed pump upgrade or equipment repairs you’ve been putting off.
The most common mistake we see is homeowners buying a full automation system when a variable speed pump with built-in scheduling would have given them 80% of the benefit at 20% of the cost. Start with the pump. Add a controller later if you want more. Most systems are designed to be expandable.
What Automation Costs in Hawaii
Hawaii pricing runs 15 to 25% higher than mainland quotes for the same work. Equipment costs are the same (you’re buying the same box from the same manufacturer), but shipping adds up and labor rates reflect our cost of living.
Basic timer upgrade: $150 to $400 installed. Replaces a corroded mechanical timer with a digital unit. Simple job, usually done in under an hour.
Mid-level controller (pump, heater, lights): $2,000 to $3,500 installed. Includes the panel, actuators for valves if needed, wiring to each device, and programming. This is the sweet spot for most homeowners.
Full system (everything integrated): $3,500 to $6,000+ installed. Includes the panel, all valve actuators, relay modules for accessories, wiring, Wi-Fi setup, and full programming. More if your existing wiring needs significant work.
These prices assume your equipment is compatible and in good working condition. If we’re replacing a pump, heater, or salt cell at the same time, the automation installation cost drops because we’re already touching the wiring.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add automation to my existing pool?
Yes. Retrofitting automation is possible on virtually any pool. The main requirement is running electrical wiring from each piece of equipment to the automation panel. If your equipment is clustered on a single pad, this is straightforward. We evaluate your setup and give you an honest quote before any work begins.
How much does pool automation cost in Hawaii?
It depends on what you're automating. A basic digital timer upgrade runs $150 to $400 installed. A mid-level controller for your pump, heater, and lights runs $2,000 to $3,500 installed. A full system with everything integrated runs $3,500 to $6,000 or more. Hawaii pricing runs 15 to 25% higher than mainland quotes due to shipping and labor costs.
Which automation brand do you recommend?
We work with Pentair, Hayward, and Jandy. Pentair is our preferred brand because the IntelliCenter system has the best app, the most reliable integration with Pentair equipment, and excellent long-term support. That said, if you already have Hayward or Jandy equipment, staying in that ecosystem often makes more sense. We help you choose based on what you already have.
Will pool automation save me money?
The biggest value is convenience, not cost savings. But there are real savings in two areas: heater management (automation can save $30 to $60 per month by running your heater only when needed) and pump scheduling (optimizing variable speed pump schedules for off-peak HECO rates). Automation also prevents equipment damage by detecting problems early, which avoids expensive repairs.
How long do automation panels last in Hawaii?
With proper mounting, surge protection, and maintenance, 8 to 12 years is typical for the main panel. Valve actuators wear out in 5 to 8 years. Temperature sensors corrode in 3 to 5 years in our salt air. We install surge protectors on every automation job and recommend desiccant packs inside the enclosure to extend board life.
Do I really need full automation, or is a timer enough?
For many pools, a quality digital timer or a variable speed pump with built-in scheduling handles 80% of what automation does at a fraction of the cost. Full automation makes the most sense if you have a heater you want to control remotely, a pool and spa combination with valve actuators, or you travel frequently and want to monitor your pool from your phone. We will tell you honestly which level fits your situation.
